マニュアル設定も可能らしいのですが、これも設定温度で fan が回ってくれません。

仕方がないのでまたまた物色していたところ、http://projekte.f4.fhtw-berlin.de/trac/s0332819-linuxtools/wiki/に良いのがありました。ページ下のほうにあるthinkpad-fancontrold_0.6.2_all.debをクリックするとインストールできます。
やれやれ。これで大丈夫かな？

8.04 にアップデートしてからtp-fancontrol が起動していないことに気が付いていませんでした。調べてみたら、
http://www.gambitchess.org/にありました。手順は

1. 次のリポジトリを追加します。
   deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/surban/ubuntu hardy main
2. Synaptic パッケージマネージャで、キーワード tpfan で検索して出てくる３つをインストールします。
3. メニューの「システム」に ThinkPad Fan Control が追加されているハズです。

です。
ただ、私のx31は 2672LJ6 で、 profile がありませんでした。
/usr/share/tpfand にある似たようなモデルのファイルをコピーして使えるかな？

まずはhttp://thinkwiki.org/wiki/How_to_control_fan_speedからスクリプトをtp-fancontrolという名前でダウンロードします。
sudo chmod 775 ./tp-fancontral とかで実行権を与えてください。

続いて、常に PC 起動時に有効となるように deamon に登録します。
本来の方法は不明ですが、ダウンロードしたスクリプトは -d オプションで　deamon 起動されるので、とりあえず次のようにしました。

1) tp-fancontral を /usr/local/bin/ に置く。

2) /etc/init.d/ に tp-fan とかのスクリプトを置く。
中身は

#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/bin/tp-fancontrol -d

です。

3) sysv-rc.conf をインストールして、先ほどの tp-fan をランレベル2〜5で有効とする。

概略は以上のとおりです。
とりあえずこれで FAN は無事に動作しました。
ターミナルから tp-fancontrol -t で様子が確認できます。
以下で CPU に負荷をかけて様子を見てみましょう。

ボリュームその他の設定は問題なく、頭を悩ませてました。

web であちこち調べてたら、結局、シリアルポートを有効にしなければならない、ということでした。なぜ？

起動時に Access IBM ボタンを押して BIOS 設定画面に入り、シリアルポートを enable にしたところ、無事に音楽を再生できました。
